Planning Summer Adventures with Your Pet

Summer is the perfect time for vacations, weekend getaways, and road trips—but deciding whether to bring your pet along isn’t always an easy choice. While some pets love the adventure, others may be more comfortable staying home with a trusted pet sitter or boarding facility.
If your pet is joining you, a little planning can make all the difference. Arizona’s extreme summer temperatures can quickly become dangerous, so taking a few extra precautions can help keep your pet safe, healthy, and comfortable wherever your travels take you.

Summer Travel Essentials

Before you hit the road, be sure to pack:

• Fresh water and a portable bowl
• Your pet’s regular food and medications
• Leash, harness, and updated ID tags
• Waste bags or litter supplies
• Favorite blanket or toy
• Cooling mat or towel
• Copies of vaccination records and a recent photo of your pet

These simple items can help reduce stress while keeping your pet comfortable throughout the trip.

Traveling Around Arizona

Whether you’re exploring Tucson or taking a day trip, remember that summer heat can become dangerous very quickly.
To help keep your pet safe:

• Travel during the cooler morning or evening hours.

• Never leave your pet in a parked vehicle—even for a few minutes.

• Offer water frequently and take breaks in shaded areas.

• Avoid walking on hot pavement. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws.

Traveling Out of State

Longer trips require a little extra preparation.
Before you leave:

• Research pet-friendly hotels and nearby emergency veterinary hospitals.

• Make sure your pet’s microchip and ID tags are up to date.

• Schedule regular stops for water, bathroom breaks, and exercise.

• Keep your pet safely secured with a crate or crash-tested harness.

• Pack enough food and medications for your entire trip.

If you’re crossing state lines, some destinations may also require proof of current vaccinations or a health certificate.

Schedule a Pre-Travel Wellness Exam

One of the best ways to prepare for travel is by scheduling a wellness exam before you leave.

A pre-travel visit allows your veterinarian to make sure your pet is healthy enough for the trip, update vaccinations if needed, refill medications, and recommend parasite prevention based on where you’ll be traveling. Different regions can expose pets to fleas, ticks, heartworm, and other diseases they may not encounter at home.
